Actually, 'Mistress' as a term of address has been corrupted in recent times, it's original meaning is far more innocent and anyone (in the past) who was addressed as 'Mistress' would have been held in some regard.

Look, let's be succinct about this:-

1. "Rise, duly obligated Brother among freemasons"; and

2. Whom are we made to figuratively represent in the SD of MM?

Deceased equine and flagelation come to my mind on this matter.

Fire Mist (22/11/2009)

I am thinking the difference between the term King or Queen is not a great one, if at all.

...  Mistress has many negative connotations at least in this country.

Hmm: When our monarch changed from King to Queen, it altered many things - not the least being the National Anthem.  Maybe not a great difference for you, but be careful - English Freemasonry is based in Great Queen Street, London.  Great King Street is in Edinburgh!

It's a shame about your negative Mistress connotations:  I had several Mistresses in  the "First Degree" of my life, and to use a "First Degree" word, they inculcated most of what I knew. ;)

Not stirring things, but my question is based in ignorance.

When we do have a female President, It will be Ms President, not Mistress President.

In the UK it would probably be Madam President.

I would not have been brave enough to call Mrs Thatcher 'Brother'. If I had then probably I would no longer be able to refer to myself as 'Brother'
