It has been explained to me that they do not consider that the term Brother, specifically within Freemasonry, is used as a gender-based descriptor. It is used in the same vein as "Fellow" which does not always mean a bloke but rather a companion.

Quite frankly its a mystery.... although Brother Lauderdale has explained on this forum several times I still don't get it.

I am sure he will answer this himself again. But I cannot resist but point out that there are no Lady Brothers [sic] or Lady Sisters [sic] or indeed Brother Ladies [sic]  in any of the Lodges I belong to or attend.

Sorry if that is shooting from the hip Brother Alan Campbell.

I think Bro Mike Martin has answered this as well as I could. Possibly Bro Cora will give a fuller explanation?

The way i see it they joined a male fraternity (it's sort of in the job description - fraternity) and as all male lodges call each other brother they wanted to imitate that form of freemasonry as best they could so the decision was taken to keep all titles as brother and not to change to sister, as that would make there freemasonry maternal and not fraternal.

To me Freemasonry is sexless.

As regards "Brother", many years ago I was in a job where Trade Union membership was mandatory. At the Meetings female members were addressed as "Brother" and in the Minutes their names were preceded by Bro. Nobody ever objected to this. The Bible, at least the one I read, refers to believers in Our Lord as "Brothers in Christ" though this may have been changed in some of the modern translations to please the PC Brigade.

What is wrong with recognising a person's gender? It is basic to their personality and who they are. You may have noticed I don't use the honorific "Brother" on this or any other forum at all. We are all people. In fact in my Lodge, we use the term "Brother" only on formal occasions, other than that, no matter who it may be, we use Christian (fore) names.

Same reason you are. "Rise, duly obligated Brother among freemasons."

My gender has nothing do with it; I am a Brother among freemasons.

We will have to agree to differ there Bro Keith. I consider it a mark of respect to call another Freemason, of whatever Constitution, GL, Obedience etc, "Brother" and indeed sometimes I will accord them their full title "W Bro", "R W Bro" , "Ill(ustrious) Bro" etc. Further, if I omit the "Bro" (unless by inadvertence), then that shows that I do not hold them in esteem. Since I consider a female Mason to be every bit as much as Mason as myself and indeed the Duke of Kent come to that, I will call her Brother, hence "Bro Cora" for example.

BTW Bro Keith, what do you think the NZ couple who got paid a large amount of money in error by their Bank, and have absconded with the lot? A bit like some UK MPs?
