Brethren,

I am hopefully being raised March 23rd and would like advice on what are the best books currently available for a Masonic newbie. I am not after anything too heavy going to begin with (but am well past Freemasonry for Dummies:D) but am really interested in the history of ritual etc. Any advice is greatly recieved.

fraternal regards Glenn

Stoney, I hate to state the obvious but try looking at previous posts under this same forum and you will see the same question being asked time and again. But for what it is worth I would recommend Bernard E. Jones - Freemasons' Guide and Compendium.

The J.S.M Ward series is something I quite enjoyed reading as I have progressed so far in Freemasonry and a nice easy introduction to furthur reading.

I have not read the MM handbook yet but I'm looking forward to getting hold of this in the near future to complete the series,

Bro Glenn,

If your lodge uses Emulation then I can recommend Graham Redman's superb book "Emulation Working Today".

If you enjoyed Freemasonry for Dummies, then "The Complete Idiot's Guide to F/M" by S. Brent Morris is in a similar vein and very good.

Also Tobias Churton's "Freemasonry- the reality" and anything at all by Revd Neville Barker Cryer.

Also I would urge you to subscribe to some of the research lodges correspondence circles...see my post at

http://www.thefreemason.com/community/FindPost210.aspx

to which list I would the Hibiscus Masonic Review vols 1 & 2 - both available from that well known river-like online book seller.

For the other orders then "Beyond the Craft" by Keith jackson will tempt you in all sorts of directions.

S&F,

Nick

Look at the offerings from Julian Rees: "Making Light" and "The Stairway of Freemasonry". Both thought provoking and accessible at the same time. "Making Light" is worth reading several times.

I think a good book for a new brother is Harry Carrs A Freemason at Work.

It answers a lot of questions in a very informative and interesting way

I would endorse both of these recommendations - excellent books - very well written

Julian Rees: "Making Light" .... worth reading several times.

I bought Making Light shortly after my initiation, taking care only to read the chapters pertinent to my current level.  I have found it to be a very good book partly because it doesn't just spoon-feed symbology to you but encourages you to think for yourself - it does this with its "Avenues to Explore" at the end of each chapter (one chapter per degree).  I intend to get the "Stairway.." book too; Julian's writing style makes you feel he is talking to you as a friend/mentor, rather than just "lecturing" you.

"Darkness Visible" by Rev Walton Hannah.

I would add that if you read this you must follow it with "Light Invisible" by Vindex. A rather flabbergasted Christian Freemason's response to DV.

IMHO, IF a new brother is interested in the symbolic/esoteric aspects of Freemasonry his first books should really be:

"The Perfect Ashlar" by John T Lawrence,

"The Apocalypse of Freemasonry" by Rev F de P Castells and

"The Key of Masonic Initiation" by PT Runton.

On that note, I would also have to recommend Workman Unashamed: Testimony of a Christian Freemason by Christopher Haffner - a book I am currently reading
