Caveat - I'm talking about England and Wales here!

A 32nd degree mason refers to a member of the Ancient & Accepted Rite, commonly called Rose Croix. Not many members receive the 32nd degree at all.

When you are perfected into Rose Croix you receive degrees 4-18. Usually in England and Wales you may receive the 30th degree within 18months to 2 years after leaving the chair. Any degrees after that are based on your activities for and within the order.

It is very different in the USA where 32/33 degree masons seem a lot more common than in England and Wales.

No doubt other Brethren will also chip in but I hope this has helped.

Its very similar in Scotland, to be accepted into this order you have to be invited and it normally takes about 5 years up hear to go from the 18th to the 30th and then its by invite for the last 3 degrees but i honestly don't know the time scale invloved. Needless to say a 32nd degree mason in the uk is a very experienced mason who has been regularly attending for a lot of years.

As has been mentioned things are different in England and Wales compared to the US, Ireland and Scotland, so having said that and as you're a member of a Lodge under the UGLE you will find the book reviewed here http://www.thefreemason.com/community/Topic22704-8-1.aspx to be helpful. You can usually pick up cheap copies either on ebay or through abe books.

Very interesting on how it differs in the US. I was at a Rose Croix Meeting when one of the younger members turned up proudly wearing a 32nd Degree Collar which he had had conferred on him on a business trip to the States. His face was a picture when the Inspector General told him to take it off!

Whilst the person concerned should have been allowed to wear the regalia of his degree, I believe that in England, as the same in Scotland, you can only be a member of one constitution at a time. Therefore his conferrment of the 32 was technically against the rules. Not sure about hononary membership though!

I too had the opportunity to have it conferred on a trip to N.C some years ago, but politely declined for that particular reason, as well as thinking that is just wasn't right to combine the two different constitutions with regards the ritual workings.

Here (at least speaking as a member of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of A. & A.S.R.) the fourth degrees through the Thirty-Second degree are all under Scottish Rite. There are required degrees a Lodge of Perfection, Princes of Jerusalem, Rose Croix and Consistory. Also here any Master Mason can get all 32 degrees Christian and non-Christian alike.

As Chris has stated we don’t wear collars.

The other problem the young man would of had is that in The US they do not wear the 32nd Degree Collar! So if he wore the collar he would of bought it over here which would of been expensive and a waste of hard earned cash!

ouch!!!
