I found this worrying article, written by the wife of a Scottish Freemason, completely by accident whilst looking for something else:

Snippet: Did you note the prefix to mason free'. That's because free is exactly what a freemason is. Free from his wife and family for much of the time. Meetings are all important. Of course they are! Especially the Friday meeting, all the others (Monday through Thursday) are just incidental, but oftentimes attendended nonetheless. In actual fact a Freemason is free to live the life of Riley. No wonder all the Freemasons I know are a happy lot. Down at the club, helping each other out, patting each other's backs. Feeling all important. Oh they do, they do, they do.

I think the author has made it clear that she means it as Satire from the title she has given it. I would love to say that I don't recognise anyone in the article but rather sadly I have met far too many freemasons who routinely neglect family in favour of self (and I mean self rather than freemasonry although there may well be overlaps).

If the author's husband is who I think he is, the wonderful irony is that he currently bears the Office of Bard, perhaps we will see a "Satire: Reply to Wife" in due course... :D

Worrying?  It's a reflection of their choices - not of freemasonry.  Of course, that is not the view of the public, but that is not our concern.

We all know our Obligations.

I for one am very much looking forward to my 'sabbatical' year, come the end of my term in office.  After 3 years in office, and walking on that tightest of lines between private and professional avocations on the one hand, and my dedication to the Craft on the other, I will dedicate 2011 to my family, friends and loved ones.  I will attend my Lodge and Chapter meetings, but I will disappear from the all-too-prominent stage.

We all make our choices - as masons as well as partners.

S&F,

Cora
