Beyond the Craft, by Keith B Jackson, ISBN 0 8518 128 4, published 1980, 94 pages. Cost £5.

The Author was an English Mason who wanted to put together information about the Appendant Orders available to Freemasons under the UGLE.

Now in its 5th edition, this book is basically a reference book/ catalogue about the Appendant Orders and therefore isn’t much of a read. Each chapter deals with a different Order detailing its history, Officers, regalia, structure, qualification for joining and a very brief description of what the degree/s teach the Candidate.

Overall Rating:6/10

Conclusion: A book to get hold of if you’re thinking of joining additional Orders and don’t know anyone in them.

If you' re after a quick reference to other orders, this book cannot be beaten. I have had copies for the last decade or so, and have slowly ticked off a good number of the orders as I have joined them.

8/10 in my opinion - really good for dipping into for a quick ten minute read up on an order.

I love this book and it can save a lot of googling when searching about obscure orders, thought it leaves you with more questions!

Strength of manhood and beauty of spirit need combination. Masonry thus needs strength with gracefulness, stability with courtesy, and firmness with gentleness.

The really good thing about Beyond The Craft is that Keith Jackson keeps it simple and almost without personal opinion, this makes it an excelellent choice for anyone wishiong to find out the basics of an Order without worrying about having a form thrust under thier nose!

I also like the way he keeps it concise, this really is a must read for anyone considering progressing in the other Orders, my own rating would be 9/10.

I was given a copy of this book (4th Edition) reprinted in 2002 by another Brother as a retirement gift. It could well be an invaluable asset to all Freemason's. The information is well sufficient to give anyone a good insight into some of the other degrees in Freemasonry. Although not a comprehensive guide to the degrees it well worthy of wetting the appetite of any Brethren contemplating finding out more, importantly the book gives us the qualification criteria, which is important. 8/10

Agreed. A must for all Freemasons who are building their own Masonic Library.

I particularly like the flow charts at the back of the book.

Ive had this book a few months now i bought it when i was not a mason just to have a read up on the different orders that there is and what there about. Although in hindsight the book is not really that much use to me it is still very interesting to read

Conclusion

Good book for anyone interested in masonry. But to get the full use out of it you would have to be a MM looking to join a side order

its not the destination but the journey that counts
