Dear Brothers

I am thinking of starting a website / blog where I am going to compile thoughtful articles etc and record my thoughts on freemasonry etc.

Are there any pitfalls / "legal" issues I should know of before i begin?

Is it acceptable or do I need permission from UGLE?

There are quite a lot of websites and blogsites out there already. If it is a personal one with personal views I dont think it would be a problem as long as you make it known that it is all done in your opinion and with your views and in no way reflects the views of any lodge/ grand lodge etc. There would be no harm in informing your Grand lodge that you are considering it

Mark,

As you may (or may not) already know, I have my own Masonic blog, Rough Ashlar. I never went directly to UGLE to tell them that I was doing it, although I know that it has been seen by several very senior chaps within UGLE, who I'm told are ok with it. I think that as long as you make it clear that any views expressed are your own, and do not necessarily represent those of any Masonic body, you are ok. :)

If you're looking for blogging software, I would highly recommend Blogger - there are a few of us on it, and it works pretty well :)

Try proboards.

http://www.chkrpavement.proboards91.com/index.cgi

I set up my Masonic Forum a year ago using them and it is very easy to use. Masonic Forum of Light also use proboards.

Compass,

Our website, being a Lodge website, needed UGLE approval and Provincial approval before it went live.

UGLE have very clear guidelines which you can request by email. Once completed you let UGLE have the link, they have a look and generally respond within a few days. In our case there was one tweak needed other than that all was fine. Province were similarly supportive and approving. The guidelines are common sense - no adverts, no summons, no names of candidates, permission to use photo of lodge members etc - there are also some standard statements they like you to use if you link to another website.

Generally very straightforward. I was lucky to have a member of our lodge who has a website/internet company so building it was easy for me - I just sent the text and photos to him and he built it.

Send me a message if I can help further.

S&F,

Nick

Bro Compass, I got the impression that you wish to run a personal Masonic Website, Forum or Blog, (there are differences between the three of these in format) rather than a Lodge Website. If it is the latter than as Bro Nappleton says there are Procedures and Regulations from UGLE, which I assume is your Grand Lodge, which need to be followed.

On the other hand if you wish to do as I have done and run an Independent Masonic Forum then you can just go ahead, no permissions from anyone need be sought. You are of course still bound by the Laws of Copyright, Defamation etc and should put a fixed (sticky) locked posting with the Rules etc of your Forum. The next choice is whether to require that you as Admin/Forum owner have to approve potential posters or let them simply sign up and post. The former method is useful to prevent trolls, troublemakers etc but does tend to reduce the number of posters.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Hi Mark,

You don't have to have permission from any Grand Lodge to set up your own website about Freemasonry. However, if it is a Lodge website it is nice to get approval from UGLE, however, as soon as you do so they will expect it to meet certain standards.

At present, the UGLE does not normally approve personal websites (ie not about specific UGLE Lodges).

However, just to ensure that you don't attract any unwelcome attention from the UGLE regarding your blog, the disclaimers mentioned above would be a good idea.
