Can anyone tell me why you have to be in Chapter to join KT?  Is there a similar kind of continuity between Chapter and KT as there is between say Craft and Mark or Craft and Chapter?

It is a required progression like being an EA before, FC before MM. I'm in Scottish Rite to get there I had to go through Lodge of Perfection, then Council Prices of Jerusalem, then Rose Croix before I got my 32nd degree in Detroit Consistory.

Here that grouping Chapter through is called Royal Arch.

What I mean is why is it required?  Why can't a newly raised Master mason become a Knight Templar?  is a good working knowledge of HRA an important building block to understanding the KT?  It is mostly with reference to the English Constitution that I'd like to know since Scottish rite is so different.

To me HRA is an explanation as to why the KT's are connected to Freemasonry in the first place so i would say that, you have to be through HRA before joining the KT's, it just makes more sense.

These things sometimes aren't quite so straight forward.

When the KT degree started being kicked around there was a lot of competition for a lot of different new degrees.

Now there where a lot of other degrees kicking around however the HRA was an accepted degree and at the time you had to be a PM to join. Also bear in mind that back then not every one would make it to the Chair.

So to make membership of HRA a pre requisite to joining your new order would in fact add some cudos to your order.

I am not saying that is the full story. Just a part thereof...

We may also take the old argument about the HRA being the completion of the 3rd into account...

That makes sense, since there are several degrees that require you to be an installed maste like HRAKTP.

And degrees where you can't go through the Chair unless you have done so in Craft.

If I were to start a new order I would look at what sort of person I would like in that order and then base my joining requirements around that.

If I wanted to start something esoteric then I would more than likely make membership of SRIA a pre requisite.

Equally there may be something about the HRA generally rather than specifically that was thought to provide a good base to KT.

Certainly whilst I do not make a ceremonial connection between HRA and KT we know that HRA is the finding of that which is lost and that KT is a Christian order.

I don't feel I can go too far down that route on an open forum but I am sure you will understand what I am trying to convey.
