Brethren,

I am not going to bore you with the background but I have come up with a questionnaire for the younger Brethren of my Mother Lodge as we would really love to have an overall impression of how we are doing and what we can do better.

Below is something I have drafted out quickly and I would really appreciate it if any of you had any thoughts on anything I could add or if I have put something that really should not be there.

Once I have got it all together I will print some copies off and at our next committee meeting we can finalise it and get it sent out.

Please have a look and let me know.

Thanks...

1 What did you think Freemasonry was before you joined?

2 Why did you join? You may choose more than one!
1. Friendship with other men.
2. A nice social evening out now and again.
3. To be a part of something historical.
4. To take part in the ritual ceromonies.
5. To learn how to be a better person.
6. To help make society better.
7. People you know and respect are members.
8. Members of your family are members.
9. You wher approached and thought it sounded like a good idea.
10. Charity work.
11. You are interested in the phylosophical side of the Craft.
12. You are interested in the mystical side of the Craft.
13. Beacause it sounded mysterious.
14. Something else (answer below).

3 What did you think after your initiation?

4 Did you enjoy your passing and raising? What are your brief thoughts?

5 Do you enjoy participating in ritual work and why do you think we do it?

6 How does Freemasonry live up to your expectations?
1. Much worse.
2. Worse.
3. Same.
4. Better.
5. Much Better.

7 Why?

8 What do you currently get out of Freemasonry?

9 What do you want to get out of Freemasonry?

10 What would you like for us as a Lodge to do more of?

11 What would you like for us as a Lodge to do less of?

12 What is the importance of Freemasonry to you?

13 Does Freemasonry make you feel part of something good?

You can't beat 'friendship with other men'! :w00t:

Strength of manhood and beauty of spirit need combination. Masonry thus needs strength with gracefulness, stability with courtesy, and firmness with gentleness.

Good point, well presented. I'll drop the "with other men" bit off...

Thanks!

A great idea and one which I would commend to all Lodges. With your permission I may even adapt it for LDH and present to some of my National Council Colleagues.

Great idea, but (there is always a but), who is going to collate this information, is it going to be anonymous, what will the lodge do when it gets the answers. Will it change the way it works to accomodate the changes.  If 3 out of 10 want change and nothing happens will they think it has been a waste of time, will anyone sit down and explain why the changes they have suggested are not being implemented.

Just playing devils advocate, i have seen these type of think tanks in operation before and then nothing coming from them. In theory it is still a good idea though.

Steve, of course you, and anyone else, has my blessing to take, change, adapt and do whatever that may help with my questionnaire...

I sent it last night as I am impatient to get it moving with a note to say if they had anything else to add to please add it.

Alan, I am going to collate it. I sent a message with it saying to return the forms to me and that I give my word as a Masonic Brother that I will never speak of what they have written to anyone. I also said that if anyone wanted to see mine as I would have seen theirs I would have no problem with this. Lastly I said that if anyone had, for any reason a problem with being identified to let me know and I would have everyone fill in paper copies and they could be put in a bag at our next meeting.

I am going to put all the answers together on one sheet and send it back out to the junior Brethren so they can see exactly what is being thought by everyone. I will then ask for further opinions.

Then I will take it to the committee and present it...

I think it will be good. So far all the answers have said that Freemasonry is "better" than they expected which is great. All the answer have said that the one thing putting them off is cliques and arguing at the top. I will particularly emphasise that point at the committee meeting.

Everyone wants more bonding meetings like BBQ's etc which is fantastic.

And to my utter surprise everyone has put that one of the reasons they joined Freemasonry was for the Philosophical-Mystical side of things...

I think this could work out well...

It's a nice idea. When the responses are considered in Committee the responders should be present to observe the reactions. They will see how Lodge democracy (or lack of it) operates. The more senior Brethren will show their true colours and any dictators will become apparent. I've known a couple.
