A few weeks ago I met up with my lodge's Preceptor and our Lodge Mentoring Officer for a chat over a coffee on our thoughts of where the lodge might go in the future given that we are finding candidates few and far between at the moment.
I started expressing to them my view that there were many reasons why men came to freemasonry and attended lodge and so we needed to think a little more widely than just degree work. As a consequence, we needed to have a wider programme.
Lots of nods came from both of them - and then we went on with some detailed planning
Lo and behold tonight I get an e-mail from our Preceptor (who has also just become our Secretary) asking me to turn my thoughts into a paper for delivery at our next lodge meeting!
Me and my big mouth!!!

Ah but Bro Wayne what a golden opportunity! You have a captive audience. If one of the Chains is there or a big-wig from Province you can have your say about what you feel needs to change to get more Candidates. Many Masons would give their eye teeth for a chance like that! Carpe diem as they say! Good luck and tally ho!

The only GL officer likely to be there is the one mandated to us to represent the PGM
Think I upset him last time we spoke as I didn't exactly toe the party line when it came to the contribution my lodge is making to the Festival this year

Good on you Wayne, bach, and all power to your elbow! The lodge is the important part of freemasonry - the province and the GL are really administratum, sure it binds us together but we shouldn't forget that our private lodges are where the real work is done. I wish you very very well brother

markmaster (02/03/2010) Good for you, though - to take this on! The issue is significant and not peculiar to the UGLE -- our Lodges (generally speaking, of course) are seeing similar challenges with membership. Thing is, IMO, that Freemasonry has exactly what many younger men are looking for: a path to discovery, a vehicle for social connection (different from "socializing"), opportunities for selflessness in a self-centered world.....and that's just the surface stuff!
I totally agree.
Wayne I would caution you though in being too brutal. I am speaking from experience here. Make sure the talk clearly gives your opinions and not the Lodge. I have previously got myself into hot water over the direction of FM and FM's in the area. However I made sure that the Lodge were never involved.
It is a big subject and one which is worthy of sending to your APGM so that he can see your thoughts, good and bad.

Bro Chestnut,"It is a big subject and one which is worthy of sending to your APGM so that he can see your thoughts, good and bad" I assume you mean that he do this after he has delivered his paper in Lodge and not to "seek permission" before he does so?
