I was attending a Mark meeting at our Masonic Hall and after the meeting a few of the brethren decided to "clean" the place a bit. I saw among the Lodge furniture, a SOE pedistal, dated 1903. It read "Queens Lodge" and SOE, Sons of England.

Does anybody have any info on the Sons of England, google also does not have much ?

Given the date could it possibly be a Fraternal Organisation set up for Roinecks and even Soutpiels (Souties) during the Boer War and have no direct connnection to Freemasonry as such, although they may well have had Passwords, Signs etc?

lol having lived in SA for 11 years and done my National Service there these slang terms are familiar. It's funny to hear them again . . .

Best,

Andy.

So it was a Benevolent Society for English Ex-Pats. Since it used Masonic terminology and may well have modeled its Regalia, Structure etc on Freemasonry, would it be what is described by UGLE as "An Organisation imitative of Freemasonry?"  I wonder if there were many people who were in both Freemasonry and S.O.E.?

Thanks Mike for the links, I only found one of them. It seems there must have been both SOE members and Masons in the area I live in, but sadly the SOE lodges ahve all closed. Do they still function in England.

You seem to know the terms Souties, english speakers, or Rooinek, as the Afrikaaners call them. I was in the South African Army and was refered to as a Soutie. Those terms are not so common anymore, as the politics has changed. My great grandparents were from the UK. Scotland, Ayrshire. I went back in 1997, and would like my kids to see the United Kingdom.
