Could anybody tell me how one joins a Red Apron Lodge?

Wot Mike said.
And regardless of whatever rank you may achieve after your appointment to Prov G Steward or G Steward you will always wear your red apron in the Stewards lodge. It is quite odd seeing our Dep Prov G Master and APGMs with their chains on but wearing a red apron.

Indeed you would Andys. I have attended the Stewards Lodge of my Province a few times as a guest of a freind who is a Provincial Steward wearing my normal craft regalia and have always been most enthusiastically welcomed.

I apologise but I forgot to say thank you for all your kind and informative replies. So what is the criteria and how do you get appointed a Grand Steward or Provincial Grand Steward?
Thanks,
Nosameerf

Provincial Grand Steward is usually appointed within 2 years of a Brother leaving the Chair of his Lodge. It is appointed by the PGM. It is usual to find within these the active Provincial Brethren who are being groomed for future service within the Province.
Grand Stewards are the equivalent but for Grand Lodge.

chestnut (11/03/2010) Grand Stewards are the equivalent but for Grand Lodge. Not quite right: Grand Stewards are nominated by the Lodges they belong to (there are only niineteen Lodges in England - called Red Apron Lodges - who are entitled to do this), and it is usual for the reigning Master each Lodge to be appointed Grand Steward during the year of his Mastership. The GM does have to approve the Lodges nominations, but that usually just a formality. Grand Stewards are responsible for organising the Grand festival, and it's a bloody expensive appointment! :)

Not for nothing have they been referred to as the 12grand stewards for their year, they used to have to provide the refreshments at quarterly comms and other grand lodge functions.
And interestingly enough, they are a Grand Officer whilst a Grand Steward but following their active year they are not Past Grand Officers, although I believe a grand rank appointment follows very quickly.........
