You can be initiated into one of the Red Apron Lodges (the Grand Stewards Lodge excepted, they have no powers of initiation) or you can become a joining member through the usual channels. They are just like other UGLE Lodges in that respect.

The active Grand Stewards are then usually the WMs of said lodges but not necessarily. There is a procedure that the Lodges have to go through to nominate their representative to wear the red apron and collar and sometimes it does go awry......

Provincial Grand Stewards Lodges are a diiferent matter - you can only become a member if you are appointed as a Prov Grand Steward.

Guy in my experience no Stewards Lodge are initiating Lodges and therefore do not accept members unless they are PGS.

I am not aware of any Stewards Lodges who do any degree work.

Bro Chestnut, I did see the Berkshire Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge perform a Third Degree at Sindlesham some years ago now when they Raised a Brother on behalf of Ashley Hill Lodge. You may even know the Brother in question as I believe he now has an Acting Rank as an "Escort" and was also a Provincial Grand Steward

The Grand Stewards Lodge do not initiate and only accept members who are Grand Stewards. The other 18 red apron lodges do initiate (although I imagine they are very selctive about initiates and joining members ;)) and it is from these lodges that the Grand Stewards are elected. Some good info here: History of Grand Stewards Lodge.

My own Stewards Lodge does one guest raising each year at the request of a 'host' lodge. We also deliver the Walking Charge as part of this ceremony.

When we were speaking about red apron lodges I understood these to be Stewards Lodges only and therefore do not initiate. Are there red apron Lodges who are not Stewards Lodges? If so what are they?

The original red apron lodges are the 19 lodges from whom the Grand Stewards are drawn:

Grand Masters Lodge No.1
Lodge of Antiquity No 2 (One of the four originals)
Royal Somerset House and Inverness No IV (Also one of the four originals)
St Georges’ and Corner Stone No 5
Lodge of Friendship No 6
British No 8
Tuscan No 14
Lodge of Emulation No 21
Globe No 23
Castle Lodge of Harmony No 26
Old Kings Arms No 28
St Albans No 29
Lodge of Felicity No 58
Lodge of Peace & Harmony No 60
Lodge of Regularity No 91
Shakespear Lodge No 99
Pilgrim Lodge No 238
Prince of Wales’s No 259

You are correct in saying that all of the Prov Grand Stewards lodges are now also known as red apron lodges. Confused? I am :D

Bro David, (Chestnut). I have never been a fan of Emulation but I was very impressed by the performance of the Berks Grand Stewards Lodge on that evening.

Steve like you in your UGLE days I attended many Stewards Lodges and Installed Masters meetings. I never ceases to amaze me how those who should know better are unable to do the simplest ritual without prompts. Something most Lodges can do easily.

Strict Emulation, which very few Lodges do, is a sight to behold as in many aspects the floorwork and procedure differ even from Emulation Lodges.
