Agneau (11/03/2010)
Grand Stewards are responsible for organising the Grand festival, and it's a bloody expensive appointment! :)
Not for nothing have they been referred to as the 12grand stewards for their year, they used to have to provide the refreshments at quarterly comms and other grand lodge functions.
And interestingly enough, they are a Grand Officer whilst a Grand Steward but following their active year they are not Past Grand Officers, although I believe a grand rank appointment follows very quickly.........

chestnut (11/03/2010) Grand Stewards are the equivalent but for Grand Lodge.
Not quite right: Grand Stewards are nominated by the Lodges they belong to (there are only niineteen Lodges in England - called Red Apron Lodges - who are entitled to do this), and it is usual for the reigning Master each Lodge to be appointed Grand Steward during the year of his Mastership. The GM does have to approve the Lodges nominations, but that usually just a formality.

Thank you for the correction.

Thank you Agneau and gsudron. Could I ask what ritual the Grand Stewards Lodges work and I imagine the standard must be extremely high? Also, why red?
I find this fascinating by the way, so any information is gratefully received.

gsudron (11/03/2010) I imagine the Grand Stewards Lodge work emulation. Certainly the Hampshire and IoW Prov Grand Steards Lodge works emulation - causes me a few problems as my Lodge is Universal.
I can imagine... my Lodge is Universal as well!
Thanks for the link, much obliged. :)

Just to clarify - the only way one could become a Grand Steward is to belong to a 'Red Apron Lodge'?

So how does one join a 'Red Apron Lodge'? After a bit of long and successful ritual, a member of a Red apron Lodge mentioned to me that it might be off interest. I don't know if he was just chatting but I will be seeing him again shortly and I was wondering if I should bring the subject up if he didn't? Especially as my next meeting will be even better then the one prior!

You join a Stewards Lodge when you are made a Steward. No mortal can join them ad hoc.
So unless you impress your APGM and PGM then no chance.
