Following on from another thread where the term GLE, (Grand Lodge Eternal) was queried as UGLE calls it the GLA (Grand Lodge Above) I thought I would produce a quick Glossary. This is not exhaustive and I apologise if there are any errors. It may however be of assistance to Brethren who are puzzled by the differences in terminology.

LDH                                                         UGLE

RWM                                             WM

WSW                                             SW

WJW                                              JW

Orator                                            Chaplin

Outer Guard                                     Tyler

Charter                                           Warrant

Widow's Trunk                                  Broken Column

A&ASR                                             A&AR

MPGC                                              no equivalent in UGLE

(Head of an LDH Federation)

no equivalent in LDH                           PGM

GLE                                                 GLA

HGW (Hearty Good Wishes)                  Sincerely and Fraternally

Piece of Architecture (POA)                 A paper presented in Lodge

Apply for an Increase in Wages             No equivalent in UGLE (AFAIK)

(When the Candidate is ready and

wishes to progress to the next Degree)

Volume of the Sacred Lore                  Volume of the Sacred Law

Cover the Temple                              Leave the "Lodge Room"

There are no doubt others and I will update if I find any. Likewise if anyone can think of a word or phrase that differs please add it.

I hope this is of assistance to Brethren.

Where does the Hearty Good Wishes come from? It's a nice little phrase and I was wondering if you knew how/why it was adopted by LDH.

Bro Guy, nice to hear from you again. I am not sure but will ask around. We tend to put it at the end of messages and letters much as others may put S&F.

Bro. Lauderdale,

There seems to be many similarities with the terminology used in Scotland.

They also have Bible Bearer, Lodge Jeweler, Provincial Bard, Lodge/Provincial Piper.

Yes, I  have always thought that myself. The Scots and the French have historical ties e.g. The Auld Alliance.

"With hearty good wishes" actually comes from a UGLE book on masonic etiquette (1920s, I think).  I'd need to dig it out - will be some time.

There are a fair few parallels with GLoS practices.  Our Scottish Lodge works the standard Scottish Working, for example, and our Exc.M. & Exaltation ceremonies including the Ceremony of P. the V...s.

Steve, is there a UGLE equivalent for the Bag of Propositions or is that universal?

No. The various matters to be considered are announced by the Secretary at the Risings. Grand Lodge at the 1st, Province at the 2nd and Ordinary Lodge Matters at the 3rd Rising. The Candidates for Passing and Raising do not Apply for an Increase in Wages in UGLE lodges and usually they are told by the Secretary when they are likely to be Passed or Raised according to the Lodge programme.

Bro Cora

The earliest UGLE reference I have found is in The First Lecture. The Lectures provide an in depth look at the ceremonies and were derived I believe from Preston's Lectures. The candidate is asked words to the effect " what do you bring with you" to which he replies HGW. It is also in the ritual of the RoS. Both of these date from the late 1700s. I believe Preston compiled his Lectures from various rituals that were in use at that time.
