My understanding is that the US has about 1.5 million regular Masons.

The state of Oklahoma has about 30,000 brothers under it's Grand Lodge, which equates to about 1% of the total population.

My lodge has about 30 members.

Having attended the Essex Provincial meeting this week, we were given some of the membership statistics (as of 31st of December 2009) that might be of some interest.

Essex has 334 Lodges with a total membership of 13,014, but the number of individual Essex Masons is 10,705. The difference between members and membership is due to the number of (Essex) Lodges a Bro. belongs to, 1,190 belong to 2 Lodges and there are 40 Bro's that are members of 5 or more (Essex) Lodges, 1 Brother is a member of 8 :w00t:

These stats only refer to Essex membership, as I know many belong to Lodges in London, Essex and other Provinces.

The average age of our initiates is 44, however (figures rounded up/down) 12% were under 30, 25% 30-39, 32% 40-49 and 18% 50-59.

During the year there were 345 Initiates, 358 Resignations, 44 exclusions and 84 deaths.

The average age of our members, again rounded. Is :: under 30 1%, 30-39 6%, 40-49 16%, 50-59 21%, 60-69 29% and 70-79 17%.

The age group with the largest percentage of members leaving (excluding those that have been Raised to the Grand Lodge Above) is the 60-69 group at 28%. Read what you will into this stat.

1.61% of the Brethren installed as WM last year were in the 80-89 age group which is the same percentage as those in the under 30 age group.

Membership attending meetings (excluding the Installed Masters Lodges, Essex Masters Lodge 3256 (which is the Largest Private Lodge in UGLE) and the North Essex Masters Lodge 9831) is 61.46%

These statistics are those given at the Meeting and I have no access to any of the source data. But I think they do give some food for thought.

To Mike, I have already taken account of UGLE, what I am looking for is actual Grand Lodges and equivalents not their divisions.

I've just got to say I'm a little surprised and disappointed that no members (except for Tom and Keith) of other Grand Lodges and Obediences actually know how many members their own Order has.

I suppose it would only take a phone call to Edinburgh to fnd out. I believe Bob Cooper has done some research into current and past membership numbers.

I have to admit, we're probably more interested in making sure we have enough numbers to open the lodge and work a degree :D

Glad you said this first Bob, i thought i was wrong for not knowing. It is really something that i don't know and i;m not really interested in, also, i wouldn't know where to start except from phoning or e-mailing grand lodge. As you say we are more interested in our sister lodges and ensuring that they go from strength to strength. Maybe that is the problem, if we were more interested in the bigger picture then we might take the eye of the ball at a local level and vice versa.

Of course reading why I am asking, does make it clear that the idea was to help in those discussion where people start going on about how GL-X does things when compared to GL-Y.

As has been evidenced in previous topics here in the past, some people do like to point the finger at some of the UGLE's organisational arrangements as if they're just there for the sake of it. So of course when everyone realises how big its membership is, in comparison to other Grand Lodges it becomes a little easier to understand why they're actually there. A bit like the recent (ish) topic which asked whether every individual Master Mason under the UGLE gets to vote for our Grand Master.

Don't worry when I've got some spare time I'll scout around and scare up the stats.

I think that is a fair point Mike.

I personally don't know all what goes on under the UGLE, but as a frequent visitor to lodges/orders down south I can get an idea of how things are run.

Last year,(or was it the year before:w00t:), when I attended the meeting of the Met GL at GQSt during the investiture of SLGR, I was surprised at the number of brethren in attendance. There were more brethren at that meeting than what would sit in my own GL.

I think it is good to get a flavour of other constitutions and how they work. Even if I, as a visitor, may not agree with some things, I tend to keep them to myself. Each constitution does work in their own way and perhaps their membership numbers do have a bearing.
