Thanks for that piece Mike, there is no end to your font of knowledge. And the answer i was looking for and found in the paper was 1967. It really is amazing sometimes how little we know of the past or how much we think we know but don't. once again thanks for the response.

Society with secrets. We are not a secret, people know we exist.

I always thought that a "secret society" was a society of which most people did not know.

This hardly applies to Freemasonry.

The story I've been given is that when Hitler went marching into France and because he had included Freemasons in his plans for 'cleansing', it was advised that Freemasons who previously had no reservations about being open on the subject of membership should perhaps keep things quieter in case Hitler did make it to British turf.

Following the war, the quietness (or secrecy) remained in place ever since.

That's the only version I've been given thus far.

makes sense, but I think that secrets are important to a degree and the secrets of our degrees should be.

say that 10 times fast.

I found this on "Masonic Service Association of North America"

CNN’s “Campbell Brown” program aired a segment on “Secret Societies: Freemasons,” providing the opportunity for Richard Fletcher, Executive Secretary, MSANA and Professor Steven Bullock, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, to shed light on the Freemasons' historic paths in Washington, D.C. To view the program’s segment, go to the link and click on the frame of the video. http://campbellbrown.blogs.cnn.com/2009/11/12/secret-societies-freemasons/

I believe the "no comment" policy of UGLE on not reacting to press statements was continued by James Stubbs when he became GS. Much of the old attitude at GQShas certainly changed in the last 10 years.

I remember somewhere that UGLE's Grand Master wants to be more open to the public.

Here in the states we can't get any more open.

lars (20/03/2010)
Freemasonry were never a secret society.

Yes it was lars, and if you look at the history it was only after certain government officials as well as royalty stepped in to speak up for freemasonry that it was given certain exceptions. If that had not happened it would have been treated the same as all other secret societies at the time.

As has been said before, our forefathers in freemasonry were not scared to call it a secret society and stand up for their rights to be a member thereof, and neither should we be.
