Afternoon All,
I have started to get the bit between my teeth whilst looking through the appendant orders and wonder if anyone knows the answer tot his question. We are told (vaguely) that there are 33 degrees in freemasonry but have (and perhaps shouldn't have) any knowledge of what these degrees are and how they are conferred. Are they for instance linked to the appendant orders or are they administrated in some other manner?
Anyone?

It rather depends on which degree you look at. Going back to the formation of UGLE, the Duke of Sussex declared that pure an ancient Masonry would consist of the first three degrees, including HRA, only. The other degrees were "disowned" by the new Grand Lodge, many of which had been worked under the "Antients" system. These degrees refused to go away however and were continued to be worked. In 1856 The Grand Mark Lodge of England and Wales (and at the time, its colonies and dependencies of the British Crown). It is this Grand Lodge that administers to (not rules over) most (but not all) of the side degrees, including KT's and the allied degrees. There are also Grand Colleges, and Priories, etc. That is a very potted and sketchy summation. but it depends which one in particular you are interested in. Can I recommend a good explanetary book, entitled "Beyond the Craft" by Keith B Jackson. ISBN 0-85318-207-8.

Thanks Roy. In fact I was reading the book you mention at the time :) I have now realised ( I think) that these "degrees" form a part of the Rose Croix? Would that be right?

As far as the "Rose Croix" goes, degrees 1-3 are not worked in RC(as the craft degrees 1-3 are worked in the craft instead). 4-17 are "confered" on a candidate prior to being given the 18th degree in full. So these degrees are never worked in private Rose Croix Chapters. However, demonstrations of the full ceremonies are carried out annually. Next year the 13th is being demonstrated.

To try and reduce confusion. The 4th to the 17th degrees referred to are those under the AASR only. There are a number of other degrees, from the Allied degrees, Secret Monitor, Red Cross of Constantine, St. Thomas of Acon etc., which are outside the AASR. In some Scottish Craft Lodges, the Mark is sometimes referred to as "the fourth degree".Rather than go into too much detail in the open, if you have a specific enquiry, I'd be happy to try and answer it by PM. I went into Rose Croix (4th to 18th) last Monday. I am also a PM in Craft, 3rd Principal in Royal Arch, Preceptor/Prior in KT's, WM of an English Mark Lodge, Comp. in Cryptic and my wife tells me she wants the hall stairs and land decorated by Christmas.

haha. many thanks. I don't have any specific questions at the moment. I plan on completing craft and chapter before I do anything else but was getting frustrated at how difficult it is to just research into this area :)
I think my wife would be somewhat perturbed if I joined anything else right now (to put it mildly :))
