Hello All,
I have been in Freemasonry now for coming on 7 years. I am a member of craft and Chapter and in the next few years (all being well) will be taking the chair in both.
This being the case I have started to think forward to my next move but have been stumped by not knowing what appendant degrees there are, and how they relate to one another. I gather that many lead from one to another and I would be intrigued to know if there are is any information out there on the possible routes you can take? Any takers? :)

Buy this: 'Beyond the Craft link' for a concise guide to what is out there, the entry requirements of each etc.
This : 'Delving further beyond the Craft link' will give you more of the historical background to the side degrees.
Once you've read those and found one or two or more that interest you, try and find someone you know who is a member and pick their brains. Many side degrees will thrust an application form your way at the slightest hint of any interest so be prepared for that!

Hi Bro.PhilI read your post with great interest, may I must ask why you feel the need to join Orders outside of Craft and Chapter?

I always say this. Wait 6 months to a year from being Raised. In that time visit as many Lodges as you can and see the Third Degree being performed. Then be Advanced into Mark . After that wait another 3 to 6 months then be Exalted into HRA. Now what you do after that depends on your time, money ,whether you wish to progress to the Chair in your Craft Lodge or not. I took 18 months from Intiation to Raising, was Advanced into Mark , Exalted into RAM, and then about a year after I had ben Raised I was Exalted into Chapter. The only other one of the Higher Degrees I joined was to be Perfected into the 18th Degree A&ASR- Rose Croix. I then concentrated on being Installed in the Chair of my Craft Lodge in Oct 1995. Thereafter, having moved back to Reading from Brighton I was to enter various other Degrees and Orders over the years from 1996 till 2006.I found that each of the various Degrees I was in added to the Foundation laid by Craft but I have always had an inclination towards the Christian Degrees of KTs, KTPs, RCC, St Thomas of Acon and most of all Royal Order of Scotland though I have to say that I also enjoyed R&SM (Cryptic) which completes the Hiramic Legend, and AMD and of course Mark and RAM. Buy the Book "Beyond The Craft", I would imagine it is available from The Freemason on line shop and read about the various Degrees and Orders and the qualifications needed to become a member.

I find it so sad that we Initiate men on the basis that they are joining an organisation free from religious dogma, which accepts men of all race, colour and creed......then we suggest they join Chritians Degrees! What are we doing when the brother who they may have worked, toiled and progressed with, side by side in the Lodge Room, cannot learn more about the Craft because of his creed? What type of message is that? It suggests that Freemasonry is not universal, unlees you are a Christian.

The Christian Orders have been going for a long time and I understand that Freemasonry in bygone times had a Christian ethos but was secularised. Those Orders apart, and that of St Lawrence the Martyr in AMD, most of the other Degrees have a Jewish aspect which is natural given the postions of King Solomon's Temple and the Hirmaic Legend, and also that of Noah and the flood in RAM, David and Jonathan in OSM and the release from Babylonish Captivity and discovery in the ruins of the Temple in HRA etc.I was in both types of Order and enjoyed the different philosophies and dramas of each. A question was asked by a Brother who has been raised, is already in Mark and HRA and is thus qualified to apply to join most of the Higher Degrees, though if he has not been through the Chair of a Craft Lodge he would not be eligible for Knight Templar Priests until he had done so. It is up to him which if any he decides to join, I can only comment from my own experiences as with all matters.

That is not what is suggested by making certain orders "Christian only" for admission. It is perhaps more of an acknowledgement that certain parts of the ceremony are specifically Christian in their nature so maybe only be relevant to those that follow that path spiritually. It follows then that to non Christians parts of the content maybe contrary to their beliefs and even offensive. Hypothetically, would you ask a person of the jewish faith to participate in a Passion Play? Or force a Muslim (saracen, by definition) through a re-enactment of a Crusade?

Mike, the only degrees that are closed to non-Christians are found in York Rite and above Royal Arch.
Whereby in Scottish Rite all can be members. Yes I do sit in Rose Croix with member who are Arab and Jew. In Scottish Rite one can find degree about both Arab subjects and Jewish subjects.
So both North Masonic and Southern Masonic of A. & A.S.R. allow all to join.
