How fascinating and an informative thread.

Steve I think all Lodges had to fall in line with the amended ritual. Similarly with HRA adaption of the plate of gold and its letters and passwords.

We still maintain the original on both of these matters.

The more I hear from the likes of Alan and the GLoS system I like the way they do things. Similarly with Steve and the LDH. Shame that UGLE seems to have watered down and altered the ritual to such a degree and that the BoC has gone from a small book to a tome.

Now which is better Glos, LDH or UGLE, only one way to find out....Fight!

(Sorry Harry Hill)

Oh dear chestnut have you learnt nothing from what i have said, don't fight ....drink. It can then be disagreed upon socially.(whatever it is, and after a wee while who cares and we all go home happy and as freinds).

Firemist, I think we are on similar song sheets:)
In our lodge we include the penalties with the obligation.
There are many reasons for this including the fact that each part of those penalties, has much more meaning than mere superficial blood and guts.
Even for those who wish to remain on the Blood and Guts level, the pure beauty of our Masonic ritual says,:Whistling: that as a Freemason it is better to be Cut up in Horrible ways with much suffering - all of which is preferable to being considered an individual of poor moral worth

Unlike the English ritual, the three villains are named in some Scottish Ritual ie., McBride's, as J...o, J...a and J...um. As the search party pass the mouth of a tavern (as I've heard it called) they hear the sounds of deep lamentation. The first voice cries out "oh i wish....etc, 1st degree" and so on.

Whilst, as Alan says, the penalties are omitted from the O's, they are explained later. In HRA the two (and sometimes three) words are still given and displayed on the C and T. As are the Hebrew characters.

Always worth reminding Brn. from outside the Scottish Constitution that each of our Lodges has the freedom to determine its own ritual.

In my ML the candidates swear to each respective antient penalty in full but for the last 20 years or so the descriptions of the penalties have been prefaced with the words, "....no lesser penalty than that of the antient, but now symbolic, one of..."
