I don't want to get all Poliical but I monitor this http://extras.timesonline.co.uk/flash/soldiers/tol_soldiers_flash_gallery.html as I have some friends who are operational but I have noticed how the majority of later casualties are being caused by IEDs.

Very sad and very proud of every proud of every one of them. Very poignant at this time of the year.

At the going down of the sun, we shall remember them.

I am honoured again this year to be representing the lodge at our local cenotaph to lay a wreath on behalf of the brethren who have fallen.

Thank you for the link Mike

I can't think that anyone viewing that link could fail to be humbled by such sacrifice. God bless each and every one of them. As someone rightly said,"If you value your freedom, thank a veteran, not a politician."

Thank for the link Mike.

I admire our Troops and it angers me that they are under-resourced to the detriment of their life and limb and that they are treated so badly when they return to the UK.

Alas, neither of the two parties likely to win the next General Election have pledged to withdraw our forces from Afghanistan so every week that tragic litany will be read by whoever the PM may be "Mr Speaker, before I detail my engagements I wish to place on record my tributes to......................., who were killed this week in Afghanistan".

Too many members of the British Armed Forces have died in this futile war. To see all those soldiers pictures was such a saddening experience, all dead for no good reason. Bring them back and soon.

New Zealand has had 140 troops in Bamyan Province since 2003 on a six monthly rotation as a Provincial Reconstruction Team. Our SAS troops were last there in 2006 when Cpl Willie Apiata was awarded the Victoria Cross for rescuing a wounded comrade under fire. They recently returned to Afghanistan

So far, we have been lucky, we have had noone killed in Afghanistan. THe latest rotation of our PRT team were on patrol and came under fire from the taliban on Sunday morning. THere were no Kiwi casualties.

May TGAOTU give all our serving soldiers the strength and fortitude to carry on as well as comforting the friends and families of those whose loved ones have been lost and injured.

My son-in-law leaves for active service in Helmand Province in twelve days time.

God speed, Michael F.

I have the honour of knowing some of those 'statistics' as friends and, as such can remember them with a smile at shared antics during their time on this sublunary abode rather than with sadness at their ascension. It is how i would like to be remembered and know that this is true for all of those fine men and women.

Absent brethren is always a difficult toast for me but my pride at having known them makes it so much easier.

Mike,

Make sure the last time he sees you before leaving you have a smile on your face and the first time you see him on his return you have your arms open wide. He will want for nothing more.

I will certainly add him to my mental list when THAOTS for my next few FBs in the hope of a successful journey and safe return.
