"I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it."-- Groucho Marx

Too many other factors beyond my control will influence my mood. I will able to tell you after 10pm whether this has been a happy or sad day.

Your missing the point dear lauderdale, you only have today so you chose to be happy, don't let the b'tards gring you down. Just smile at them. A smile costs nothing and gives so much more enjoyment. It can also annoy a great deal of people as well, so maybe thats why my twisted nature enjoys it so much.

Ok, a quick analysis. I am in reasonable health for a man of my age and build, I am solvent, I am in a job. My father is a lot better than he was last week when I had to go up to Scotland. Reasons to be Cheerful as Ian Drury would have said. However, I could pick up my posts, assuming they are not again on strike, from the lobby downstairs as I live in a flat and the mail is not delivered to ones's door but left to be picked up from the common hallway. There could be a letter which will ruin my day. Again at 2pm I will be at work. Possibly some problem could have occurred, I could have to go to some boring meeting I have no desire to attend, a straightforward job could go wrong. Something could happen which is out of my control and not of my making which could turn a fairly nondescript and peaceful day up till now into a train wreck. As I have said I will be the better able to tell you after 10pm tonight. Now possibly, just possibly, the ticket I have bought for the Euro-Millions could pay a good win, not the usual few quid I tend to get, and I could have enough money to retire and move to The Algarve. now THAT would certainly make me very happy but the odds are astronomical! I may be Mister Miseryguts but simply saying "This is going to be a happy day" just does not cut it with me as there are far too many bast*rds out there who can ensure that it is not and over whom I have no control.

All very well as far as it goes.I was in a traffic hold up yesterday. When the police finally waived us on I saw the wreckage of the most horrendous RTA I've ever been that close to. My guts were in a knot and my heart in my mouth for the rest of the day,but I do take your point.

I've heard it said not just day to day as this quote is, but moment to moment. It is for us to be guarded in action and word so that we may continually do what is right. By doing so, we need not be happy or unhappy as the concept of those highs require the lows, but so that we may be peaceful and content in knowing we did what we could at the moment. If that wasn't enough, then it is a learning experience to do better in the future, no more, no less. The lows of being unhappy indicate that we are exceptially happy some other time. There in is a sign that perhps we are unhappy because we did not act in balance with ourslves, another, or the world. It is our choice to be in balance, or not. To be at peace, making peace, and exemplifying peace....... or not. It is our choice.

Fire Mist (06/11/2009) It is our choice to be in balance, or not. To be at peace, making peace, and exemplifying peace....... or not. It is our choice.Guess I just aint that cosmic yet. I can still get thrown off balance sometimes.:P;)

Lauderdale (06/11/2009) I may be Mister Miseryguts but simply saying "This is going to be a happy day" just does not cut it with me as there are far too many bast*rds out there who can ensure that it is not and over whom I have no control.Mind you, even the stoopidist of bast*rds has the potential to realise that they are indeed stoopid bast*rds, and seek to make amends where they can.
