Hi All

I was wondering what the members here thought of the concept of a social networking site, similar to, though less complicated than Facebook but dedicated to Freemasons?

It is something I am able to create and for those of us who find Facebook too much, a slimmed down version allowing members to post messages, share files etc might be of interest.

Please vote and let me know.

Thanks
Carl.

Like music albums and stuff? ;) Only joking, sounds interesting. You making something then?

Well the idea is to keep it simple and when I say share files I mean strictly Office documents etc ;)

I have the ability to create a decent social networking site and thought I'd ask here. I get frustrated with Facebook, too much going on and sick of getting invitations to "join my farm" and "add somebody to my top friends" etc etc.

I'd like something simpler and easier to figure out and thought that a social network dedicated to Freemasons might be a workable and enjoyable idea for users.

It would be a simple, clear profile with messaging, the ability to "add friends" and maybe make some new connections around the world.

Hi Carl,

Sounds like a good idea.

There actually is (or was) one, I joined a couple of years ago but didn't really keep it up.

Maybe someone else here can remember what it was?

Actually I think I joined this one:

http://twtmag.ning.com/ but there appears to be a few:

http://www.21stcenturyfreemason.com/content/freemasonry-20-look-four-masonic-social-networks

Maybe you could see if Thefreemason.com would be interested in you building one for them?

Please can I say I think your idea is great and laud your ability to produce such a thing. I'm not trying to be negative by posting this. I'm just showing that there are some out there, which probably means there is room for one more!

Thanks...

Thanks for the links dp.

I think you're idea may work the best i.e linking it from this site and allowing thefreemason to offer it as a complimentary service in addition to this site.

I will see what I can cobble together, provide a link on here for all that want to try it to do so and see what people think.

Erm well no, actually!

You see during our (TFM's that is) 10 years we've done stuff like this before. I used to have a huge links page that I maintained here which was to promote links to most of the Masonic forums, networks, Grand Lodges and individual sites etc,  that got hacked and caused the site owners huge expense and problems. We've also had IM and "chat" rooms attached and due to time zones they were rarely used befiore they fell into abeyance and were removed.

Nowadays we don't get involved and we don't have other sites promoted in this Forum. This Forum is a Forum, it's not for advertising, it's for discussion. There are already dozens of options for Masonic networking on the Net and to be honest and strictly IMHO I believe that it fractures the possibilities of effective Masonic networking for people to continually reinvent what already exists and is available. Also in my opinion and 10 years of experience I have yet to see any real improvement or difference come of newer versions except for the dilution of unity and discussion.

Just an idea, not trying to step on any toes.

I'll not continue then.
