I have seen many really good Lodge websites through this forum, but I was wondering exactly what are the issues regarding the setting up of a Lodge website. The questions I have in mind are:

Who designs the website?
What do you put in it?
Are there any frameworks out there that we can build on?
Who maintains it?
How is it hosted?
Does your GL have a policy on Lodge websites?

I'm sure that I've missed out a few questions, but your views please, Brethren.

As far as I am aware, if an UGLE Lodge wishes to have a website they have to get permission from UGLE , possibly via their Province, and must show the UGLE mark of approval, (The Coat of Arms) on the front page. There are probably a load of rules as to what they can and cannot have on their website but I am sure that some of the erudite UGLE Brethren here who are well versed in their Book of Constitutions and other rules could eludidate.

I am all for Lodge websites and have seen some really good ones and some that have been less than adequate. A good one will not only be appealing to the eye (and ear if they have music) and easily navigated but will give the vital information of the Lodge's Meetings place and time, possibly the work they are to do at that meeting for example "Monday 28th Sept at 6.30pm at The Masonic Temple, High Street, Second Degree" and contact details of the Lodge Secretary for Brethren who may wish to visit. Lodge History and a list of current Officers is also helpful.

If a lodge website wishes to it can apply for UGLE 'approval' and carry the relevant 'badge' on their website.
AFAIK there is no dictat stating that all lodge websites need to be approved by UGLE - but I'm sure if there is someone will be along shortly to point it out.....

Does your GL have a policy on Lodge websites?
Yes but you only have to comply with it if you want your Website to carry its Charter Mark.

How about a fixed topic in Knobs where people can post their sites and swap ideas/tips?

Maybe as a sticky we could have a link to the UGLE regs and any other regs from any other constitutions should non UGLE brethren have any questions?

For nearly 6 years I was the person responsible for granting approvals on behalf or the Province of Warwickshire. Our website then carried guidelines, and still does. They can be found here http://www.warwickshirepgl.org.uk/code_of_practice.php?bcsi_scan_C45502AD544325A0=0&bcsi_scan_filename=code_of_practice.php

I designed, run and manage our lodge website, http://www.ashleyhill7861.org.uk

It's based on open source blog software from WordPress. I've edited the look (theme) and some code to make it function how I would like.

I host the website with Jomongee for a very reasonable £30p/a for domain name and web space.

The site contains the latest news from the lodge, history about the lodge, and information for Masons and non-Masons alike.

Take a browse. If you have any questions, give me a shout.

A first class website Bro Rowan. Quite a few familiar names there too. Please pass my best wishes to W Bro Pacey and the other Brethren.

Above are a couple of websites I have built, Border Lode, my Mother lodge and Ariel a local lodge where I have a number of friends who asked for my assistance in getting them online. Ariel are waiting to hear back from UGLE Webmaster to put the charter mark on the front page as yet but that will hopefully be soon.

I do lack any artistic talent so the websites remain functional rather than beautiful i'm afraid. I do have a local contact who is a graphic designer (and on the square) and when we can both find the time I hope we might achieve some smarter graphics.

A lodge website, not only serves members and regular visitors but is an advert of your existence to the world. We've had some great communications via the website and the return of a long lost Masters Jewel for our collection.
