We all know that many new Freemasons have a great thirst for knowledge, probably one of the reasons why they joined in the first place.

We also know that there are many unsuitable books which are sold under the heading of Freemasonry that they should avoid.

What would be the one book you would consider as essential reading for every new Master Mason in his first year?

What would be the one book you would suggest they avoid?

Books to read "Darkness Visible" by Walton Hannah, written as an anti-book but very useful as a reference for Rituals etc and quire accurate in that respect whatever Hannah's adverse opinions of Freemasory. The other I would recommend is "The Freemasons' Guide and Compendium" by Bernard E Jones. It is a text book rather than an exciting read but there is scarely a question that may arise in Freemasonry where that book will not set you right.

Books to avoid. "The Brotherhood" by Stephen Knight and "Inside the Brotherhood" by Martin Short. Inaccurate and sensationlist rubbish!

The book all MM should read first is their ritual book.
The book to avoid is The Brotherhood (utter crap).

Strength of manhood and beauty of spirit need combination. Masonry thus needs strength with gracefulness, stability with courtesy, and firmness with gentleness.
