Surely if "we" want to set the record straight we need to avoid politician-speak like the answer to point 8. There is neither denial nor explanation in that answer, just fodder for the anti-masonic brigade.

8. The opening pages of “The Lost Symbol” describe a 33rd degree Scottish Rite ritual ceremony. Do Masons really drink out of skulls?

The skull has appeared for centuries as a common symbol of mortality, not only in various degrees of Masonic ritual, but in many other fraternal and religious organizations. The specific ceremony described by Brown in the prologue of The Lost Symbol appears to be adapted from a sensationalized exposé, Scotch Rite Masonry Illustrated, published in 1887 by the Reverend John Blanchard. Blanchard's description of the 33rd degree has been repeated by many anti-Masonic authors over the years, even though it is not accurate.

Brethren, after the discussion on this topic, I believe you can understand now why this answer was worded in the careful manner it was. :Whistling:

Cheers.

Oh I understood exactly why it was worded in the careful manner it was, I just found it a bit ironic that "we" chose to do so on a web page apparently dedicated to repudiating such allegations. :Whistling:

Because the day after the book came out I had 28 radio interviews, and it was the third or fourth question asked by interviewers. The answer that seemed to be best was, "We don't discuss current ritual, but it's not accurate for the 33rd today, and here's where Brown cribbed it from."

Chris, welcome to the forum from someone a little northeast of you.
I understand you have a correction to be made in you book about a US quarter.  I just talked to John Snider, he said Hi!

I think Dan Brown has mixed emotions on Freemasonry, like a love hate relationship. I think he knows that Freemasonry is not perfect and its members never promote that we are a Order of all knowing, perfect moral beings. We are still human beings striving for answers and seeking to improve on morality, virtue, and values. Dan Brown is defending our position to some degree but also makes it interesting by adding fictionous elements to the stories to make it a bit more dramatic for people that enjoy those elements in stories.

He should become a Freemason but might get denied because he could pose a threat to the Order (see Infiltration).

I believe he wants the general public to know that not everything is "seeing is believing" (see Angels and Demons). I believe he attacks self-righteousness in general and not in a blame game way, no specific group or person, just the principle of self-righteousness. That is my impression of his style.
