Stu, even though we wear different glasses I think we both love the game very much.
RefAs to resetting the scrum for 6 minutes, I'd suggest the ref needed to penalise quicker under Law 10.3 - repeated infringements. I don't want the game riddled with penalties, there must be away of sorting out the Scrum, so the game keeps on flowing.
There is nothing more boring than watching a game full of whistle blowing and penalties.
We have a round of the sevens this weekend in Wellington, the whole city is a Buzz, and even the Welsh team are full of confidence. The fans are getting excited and the stadium prices are affordable so local fans can afford to go to the matches, and go they will with the stadium packed out with happy excited people. Not like the world cup next year when most of the tickets for the home team (the All Blacks) matches and other important games will be priced way way above most Kiwi's means.
Cheers

Whistler, (great handle for this thread, btw) I agree wholeheartedly that we don't want to ruin the game with too many penalties, but sometimes we need as referees to manage what's in front of us. If a scrum's being constantly reset, there's a problem. The ref should deal.

let me give you a recent example - yesterday I was reffing a cup semi final - the North Mids U16 schools cup. At the breakdown, the Red team were consistently going off their feet and killing the ball. I penalised it 3 times, and then had a word with the skipper at down time, advising him that someone could be going in the sin bin if this area wasn't tidied up. Just after half time, it happened again. I warned the skipper again, telling him I had let it go this once because we all go to sleep at half time. The very next ruck, it happened again, and the guilty player spent the next 10 minutes on the "naughty step". It didn't happen again all match, because the players could see I wasn't going to tolerate it!

Stu - Fair Comment. ( I really do like Good Refs:P)
Also we always remember if our team losses we need a Ref to blame:hehe:
I was a bit surprised at a comment in the news about the club over your way where the Club got penalized for having more than 15 men on the field which is fair enough but the player who went on also got penalized - is the poor chap supposed to stop and count the players after being told to go onto the field.
BTW do you ever watch or Ref the Sevens - as I mentioned in a previous post - suspect sadly that the 15man game may be heading the way Test Cricket has, in favour of the more hyped up shorter game.
Bod - I will cheer for the Welsh Sevens team - until they look like winning the competition again:w00t:

The player should not have gone on the field on the say-so of his team manager, he should have waited for the 4th Official's permission having talked to the ref. I do that job at that level, and can't see how it happened.

I am doing a 7's festival at a school soon - U13's to U15's. Should be fun, if I can keep up

That would make me nearly 60! They're nearer a 3rd of my age, I'm 48

Six Nations Starts this weekend!

Chris Paterson in the Starting Line up - his 99th Cap for Scotland.

Lets hope that Scotland can win their first match of the 6 Nations - something we have not done since 2006..
