He could be described as the evil spirit in the wilderness, on the day of atonement, the high priest would sent the scapegoat which held all the sins of Israel to be devoured by Azaziel - or Azazel. I think the term for this festival is Yom Kippur.

In Milton's Paradise Lost he is seen as the standard bearer at Lucifier's right hand.

Most Theosophy groups see him as the bringer of enlightenment.

Hi Azaziel,

I came across the name whilst reading an article titled " The Yezidis" Angel or devil worshipper of the near east by Damon Zacharias Lycourinos.

BTW, the article concluded they were angel worshippers

I think I read in the book of Enoch that Azaziel was one of the leaders of the angels who fell in love with woman in Genesis 6:2-4

God sees the sin brought about by Azazel and has Raphael “bind Azazel hand and foot and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening in the desert — which is in Dudael — and cast him therein. And place upon him rough and jagged rocks, and cover him with darkness, and let him abide there forever, and cover his face that he may not see light.”

(from wikipedia)

I am going to a theological college with a Protestant bent, so the books of the Apocryha are not concentrated on.  But I have always been fascinated with forbidden books.
